Hidden in the middle of nowhere is Calcott Hall, a dairy farm built around 1720 in the Georgian style, later becoming Grade II listed in 1953 and standing still since 2003 after the owner, Frances Jones, passed away.

Nicknamed by Urban Explorers as “The Red Dress Manor” because of a red satin dress found within a wardrobe next to a nightstand with a photograph of Frances wearing the dress, we took a look inside Calcott Hall to see what was left behind.

Calcott Hall (AKA Red Dress Manor)

Visit Date: October 2012

Having already been out on the road for several hours and with light fading quickly, our visit to this 18th century property was rushed. We were also aware that a recent influx of explorers visiting caught the eye of a neighbouring farmer who was looking out for the property and was known to become aggressive from time to time. In hindsight, we would have loved to spend far more time within Calcott Hall and one day, we will certainly return.

Calcott Hall is in a horrid state of repair and in fact features on the “Buildings at Risk” register but despite this, inside was full of personal possessions reminding us that this, regardless of the current condition, was previously a home, full of memories.

We believe that Frances was never married and lived within the property with her brother, William. It is also believed that she was the last person to live in the house until her passing in 2003.

By the time we visited Calcott Hall, the huge number of previous visitors were apparent, items strewn across the floors, placed in photogenic positions and dare we say, a clear disregard for the memories kept within.

The elements are already taking over this property quickly and without major work being undertaken to restore and save it, it won’t be long until the only future will be demolition.
