These photographs were captured in 2012 and were given minor edits during 2024. They remain a true record of the building during the time of capture by the former Urbex Photography Team.
Southerndown Care Home was built in 1890 and was originally known as “The Dunraven Hotel”. Since the 1940’s, it has been occupied as a convalescence and care home for the blind.
The building was constructed in the style of a castle with accommodation spanning across three floors with additional attic accommodation above.
Southerndown Care Home…
Visit Date: April 2012
The Dunraven Hotel was originally a low thatched building. This was demolished in
1890 to cater for a higher class of visitor, running a horse brake service to and
from Southerndown Station Road, now closed, at Castle-
Southerndown Care Home was a registered charity with all profits being used to improve and upgrade the facility.
We have seen this building many times before but all our previous attempts to wander the insides failed! This time however, we were lucky! A fire door forced open by metal thieves, who we later found inside, gave us our chance!
Although we had the internal floor plans to this grand care home, we found ourselves constantly going around in circles! The endless doors, long hallways and large number of rooms hiding around every corner made it very difficult to navigate around.
Southerndown Care Home certainly lived up to our expectations though. Despite the damage that appears to be as a result of recent metal thefts, curtains remain in situ, mirrors still hang upon the wall, fireplaces stand proud and chandeliers wait to be lit once again.
Sadly however, with holes within the roof and now metal thefts taking place, renovating this grand building will only become harder over the years and we anticipate the site will end in demolition or the victim of an arson attack like so many others that we have visited over the years.
