Fairwood Hospital, Swansea was built in 1914 and originally used for keeping groups of infected patients isolated. The complex features 4 small buildings so most certainly isn’t the largest hospital in the area but perfect for this use.

In later life, Fairwood Hospital was then used as a maternity hospital for the local area followed by a cottage type hospital, caring for those that had been discharged from the main hospitals but were still unable to return home.

Visit Date: May 2019

In 2010, the decision was made to close Fairwood Hospital despite campaigners strong objections.

At the time of closure, the hospital had 19 convalescent beds and employed 20 nurses along with several other staff members.

It was claimed by the senior bosses at the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board that the Fairwood Hospital site was costing more than £500,000 per year to run but more worryingly that it lacked the required equipment and Doctors to run the hospital. They claimed that the money would be better spent trying to return patients to their home quicker.

Fairwood Hospital is now heavily vandalised so its future uses are very limited. We anticipate that this will be another former hospital that is demolished to make way for residential properties of some sort.

Despite the vandalism, Fairwood Hospital still retains some of its original features such as the bed side lamps, nurse call buttons and curtains, all of which make the explore a little more interesting.

Mattresses from hospital beds lay thrown across the floor reminds you clearly of its former use.
