Holdings Country Pottery was founded in 1898 on a large clay deposit in Lancashire. It used its own clay, which was dug, blended, washed and processed before being made into passes for the potters wheel. Since the start of the century until its closure, little changed in the process and the factory opened its doors to visitors so that they could see the craftsman creating ‘Walidan Ware’ in the traditional way.

The family tradition was started by James Holding in 1842 a mile or so away from the present site which was opened just before the turn of the century by James’ grandsons. The pottery then proceeded to stay within the gamily as generations passed and took over management at the factory.
We are unaware of the year in which Holdings Country Pottery was abandoned but given the current state and some of the items left behind, we predict that it has been closed for more than 20 years.
We really didn’t know what to expect when we planned our visit to this historic family owned pottery, we had seen some photographs online but most just shown the ‘mess’ rather than any particular aspect. We were surprised to see so much left behind as we walked around. We were able to get a feel for how the family once operated their business.
