Talgarth Mental Asylum, or as it’s formally known Mid Wales Hospital was designed by Messrs Giles, Gough and Trollope of London following the compact arrow plan and was built at a cost of £126,000.

Originally named the Brecon and Radnor Joint Counties Lunatic Asylum, it was opened on March 18 1903.

Like other contemporary institutions, the asylum was designed to be self-sufficient and had its own private water, electricity, heating and sewerage systems as well as a considerable agricultural estate.

After the introduction of Care in the Community in the early 1980’s the hospital went into a period of decline and it finally closed in 1999. Some facilities moved into nearby Bronllys Hospital which was formally known as the South Wales Sanitorium).

Following closure, the buildings and surrounding estate were sold to the former Chief Medical Officer for just £227,000. Plans were made to redevelop the site as a business park but due to the isolated location and the global recession, the venture failed.

By 2009, the site was offered for sale once again but by this time, the buildings were now derelict and many of the original slate roof tiles had been stripped.

Our visit to this isolated location was a short one. The floors were in a bad state and during our visit, the local farmer who acts as security was searching for us.

Talgarth Mental Asylum has suffered over the years including recently when a large portion of one of the wards crumbled after the area was hit with strong winds.

We’re unsure what the future will bring for this location, fellow explorers are known to visit the site on a regular basis and all report the buildings becoming more unsafe each time. Considering the fact they are now falling down with the wind, we feel it will only be a matter of time until the entire site is demolished.
